Stasi Headquarters Tour

Service and Supply Wing (House 18)

In 1979, the MfS tore down three residential buildings built by Bauhaus architect Bruno Taut as well as a New Apostolic church. The structures had to give way to a service and supply complex for MfS employees. Since Stasi employees were, for security reasons, not supposed to leave the grounds to do errands, they had the opportunity to shop, book travel, take their meals and get their hair cut in House 18. The building also had a conference centre and cinema. After completion of the building in 1982, Normannenstraße was closed off to vehicles. It remained part of the MfS-restricted area until the end of 1989. When thousands of people stormed the grounds on 15 January 1990, most of them entered House 18.

Today, the building is in private hands.
